How To Wash Performance Underwear So It Lasts
Wash performance underwear at 30°C or cooler, skip the fabric softener, and let it air dry. Those three habits keep the stretch and the moisture-wicking working for much longer.
How To Wash It
- Wash soon after riding. Don't leave a sweaty pair balled up in a kit bag; bacteria and smell set in.
- Turn it inside out to protect prints and keep the logo waistband looking new.
- 30°C or cooler on a normal or synthetics cycle. Hot washes break down the stretch fibres.
- No fabric softener. It coats the fibres and blocks the moisture-wicking. Use a normal or sports detergent.
- Separate from muddy kit. Wash riding pants and jerseys on their own; grit and Velcro wear underwear out.
How To Dry It
Hang it to air dry. Performance fabric dries quickly on its own, and high dryer heat is the fastest way to lose stretch and shape. Avoid radiators and direct heat.
When To Replace A Pair
Replace it when the waistband stops holding, the fabric goes thin or see-through, or it smells even after washing. With a few pairs on rotation, a good pair lasts much longer than one worn every day.
Quick Answers
Can I tumble dry performance underwear?
It's best not to. High heat damages the stretch fibres. If you must, use the lowest heat setting.
Why does my sports underwear still smell after washing?
Usually fabric softener build-up or leaving it damp too long. Skip softener, wash soon after use and dry it fully.
